“St Mary’s Top The Podium At City Athletics Championships”
St Mary’s College topped the podium as they took the boys and girls overall team titles as well as the combined overall title at the Hull Active Schools Secondary Athletics Championships. There were numerous fine individual performances particularly on the track over the day.
Henry Nweze (St Mary’s College) had an impressive day winning four golds as he stormed to victory in the 100m and 200m with times of 11.49s and 23.68s. In addition, he produced a 5.93m long jump and anchored the St Mary’s College 4 x 100m relay time to victory in 47.87s. In addition to Nweze, there were some impressive performances in the sprints. Michael Bawuah (Boulevard Academy) stormed to victory in the Year 7 Boys 100m in 13.40s. Kingswood Academy duo Alfie Bolton and Kieran Shearer took the Years 8 and 9 titles respectively with times of 12.90s and 12.36s. In the Boys 200m competitions, Winifred Holtby’s Dylan Malcolm won the Year 7 race in 27.38s with The Marvell College’s Ben Storrer taking the Year 8 race in 27.05s. Storrer also guided his 4 x 100m relay team to the title in 54.07s. St Mary’s Reilly Emmerson won the Year 9 200m race in 24.77s. Emmerson was part of the St Mary’s 4 x 100m relay team which won in 50.17s.
St Mary’s dominated the boys middle distance events with Rione Rahman winning the Year 8 800m title in 2 mins 27.3 and Oliver Donkin taking the Year 9 title in an impressive 2 mins 16.8. Kian Wiles was a comfortable winner in the Year 9 1500m with Kelvin Hall’s Mason Johnson similarly winning the Year 7 event. In the field events, St Mary’s duo Finlay Southcoat and Seb Hague made it a treble of wins in the 7 and 8 Long Jump with leaps of 4.34m and 4.78m respectively. Sirius Academy North duo Tommy Uscroft and Ignas Tolvasa won the Year 8 and 10 Shot competitions with throws of 10.68m and 10.69m. Malet Lambert’s Finley Armstrong threw 9.63m to complete an impressive shot competition over the day. Owen Foster (St Mary’s College) produced an a leap of 1.40m to win the Year 8 Boys High Jump.
In the girls competition, Alisha Leaming (St Mary’s College) won the Year 7 Girls 100m in an impressive 13.92s. Similarly, Malet Lambert’s Erin Symons stormed to victory in the Year 7 Girls 200m in 29.24 and equally Sirius Academy North’s Farida Hamidu won the Year 8 Girls event in 29.24s. Sirius Academy West dominated the best performances in the field events. Izzy Watts won the Year 7 High Jump with 1.28m and Lauren McClean won the Year 9 event with a jump of 1.50m. Team mate Lydia Moore won the Year 7 Shot with a throw of 7.27m.
In the team events, St Mary’s College won the Year 7 Girls, Year 8 Girls, Year 8 Boys and Year 9 Boys events with Kelvin Hall winning the Year 7 Boys competition. Malet Lambert won the Year 10 Boys and Girls events with Sirius Academy West winning the Year 9 Girls competition.
