St Mary’s College (Hull) claimed four out of the available five secondary school titles at the Table Tennis England Humber School Games Team Table Tennis Championship Finals. The host school claimed the Under 19 Boys title and then followed up with wins in the Under 13 Boys, Under 13 Girls and Under 16 Boys categories with Sir John Nelthorpe (North Lincolnshire) claiming the Under 16 Girls title.
St Mary’s College began their defence of the Under 13 Boys Table Tennis England National Schools Team title with comfortable wins throughout the competition to take the title. Humberston Academy (North East Lincolnshire) were runners up with South Hunsley (East Riding) claiming third place over South Axholme Academy (North Lincolnshire). St Mary’s College B were fifth, Sir John Nelthorpe sixth and Toll Bar Academy (North East Lincolnshire) in seventh place.
St Mary’s College claimed the Under 13 Girls title. In a five team round robin, the deciding game was a battle between the hosts and Hull Active Schools Champions Kelvin Hall. In a close game, St Mary’s College overturned the result from the district round to claim the overall title. Sir John Nelthorpe finished in third place with Frederick Gough (North Lincolnshire) and St James (North East Lincolnshire) in joint fourth place.
St Mary’s dominance continued as they claimed the top two positions in the Under 16 Boys competition. Their A and B teams both won their groups and semi-finals with St Mary’s College A taking the title against their counterparts. Beverley Grammar (East Riding) and South Axholme Academy were runners up in their group with the East Riding School taking third place. Toll Bar Academy were fifth, Sir John Nelthorpe sixth and Healing (North East Lincolnshire) finished in seventh place.
Sir John Nelthorpe were the dominant team in the Under 16 girls competition as they took the title after beating South Hunsley in the final. South Hunsley battled hard to reach the final after a pulsating semi-final with Healing finished 4-4 in matches with the East Riding team winning 10-8 on game countback. St James beat Healing to claim third place. The Axholme Academy (North Lincolnshire) were fifth after beating St Mary’s College.
The winning teams will now go onto represent the Humber area in the Table Tennis England Zonal Finals in Cumbria in January.
