St Mary’s College Under 13 Boys table tennis team retained the Butterfly ESTTA/Table Tennis England National Schools Team Championships title at Hinckley Leisure Centre.
St Mary’s College showed determination and resilience on several occasions as they fought from two sets down to win 3-2 in many individual matches. Notably Ashton Innes in the first round and Ehsan Jawadi in two matches faced several match points in five set matches and fought back to win. In the first two matches, they beat Sacred Heart RC School, Brixton 6-2 and Carleton le Willows Academy 7-1.
In the deciding game against University College School, Hampstead, St Mary’s were 2-0 down with the first to five individual matches taking the title. Luke Hodgson and Zac Foston showed great maturity in winning the next two matches to level the scores up. At 3-2 down, St Mary’s College were again under pressure but Hodgson, Foston and Jake Hewitt won the last 3 games to secure the title again.
The Under 19 Boys team found the competition much tougher. After losing to Eggbuckland Community College, Plymouth and the eventual winners, the outstanding Whitgift School, Croydon the team of Harry Dai, Che Goulbourne, Liam Marsh, David Porubiak and Sean McGuinness beat Carleton le Willows Academy 5-3 to take third place.
