Five Hull Schools teams made a five and a half hour round trip to Kirkby Stephen Grammar School, Cumbria for the Table Tennis England National Schools Team Championships North East Zonal Finals. In the Under 11 Boys, Victoria Dock won both their matches 8-0 to progress to the last 16 teams in the country as North east Champions.
In the Under 13 Boys, St Mary’s College continued their defence of their National Schools Title in confident fashion beating Dowdales School 8-0, Nunthorpe Academy 7-1, Kirkby Stephen Grammar School 7-1 and St John Fisher, Harrogate 7-1. They will be joined in the last 16 teams in the country by the Under 19 Boys who beat St John Fisher, Harrogate 8-0 and Millom School, Cumbria 7-1.
Performance of the weekend goes to St Mary’s College Under 16 Boys team. With a young squad, they progressed to the next round beating St John Fisher, Harrogate 5-3 and drew with John Spence, North Shields to progress to the semi-finals. In the semi-final, they beat Nunthorpe Academy 5-3 and then lost to Longfield Academy of Sport 7-1. However, finishing in second place was good enough to progress to the Regional Final.
In the Under 16 Girls, St Mary’s College finished in third place losing to Acklam Grange and South Hunsley 6-2. South Hunsley won the tournament and progress to the Regional Final.
