Sirius Academy West remain undefeated to take the Year 9 Hull Active Schools Rounders Championships at St Mary’s College and book their place at the Humber School Games at Hymers College in July.
Eight teams contested the Championships and were split into two groups of four playing 14 game innings. In Group A, Winifred Holtby Academy topped the group after being unbeaten after wins against St Mary’s College A and Newland and a draw against Boulevard Academy. Newland finished second after wins against the other two teams in the group. Boulevard Academy were third after another draw against St Mary’s College A.
In the opening game of Group B, Sirius Academy West drew with St Mary’s College B. However, further wins against Sirius Academy North and Archbishop Sentamu Academy. St Mary’s College B beat Archbishop Sentamu Academy 6-5 and then clung onto the runners up spot after being beaten by Sirius Academy North 4.5-3. Sirius Academy North finished in third place after finishing on the same number of points as Archbishop Sentamu Academy but had fewer outs.
The competition then split into two separate competitions. The Division 1 semi-finals were enthralling and extremely close encounters. St Mary’s College drew with Winifred Holtby Academy 6.5-6.5 but progressed to the final with fewer players being out. Identically in the other semi-final, Sirius Academy West drew with Newland but again progressed by having one less player out. In the final, Sirius Academy West proved too strong for their hosts and took the title with St Mary’s College also progressing to the County Finals. Newland took third place with Winifred Holtby Academy in fourth.
The Division 2 competition saw Archbishop Sentamu Academy and St Mary’s College A progress to the final with Archie beating their hosts to take the title. Boulevard Academy beat Sirius Academy North by half a rounder to take third place in another competitive game.
