The Hull Schools Year 8 Rugby Cup was the final trophy on offer this season and Archbishop Sentamu Academy claimed it from a battling Kelvin Hall. The game was a fantastic spectacle with many tries being scored with Archbishop just having the cutting edge.
In the opening five minutes, both defences were dominant. Kelvin Hall left a gap in their defence which Archbishops Leon Thistleton took full advantage of, to score the opening try of the final. Tom Black added the extras. Kelvin Hall hit back quickly when Kai Armstrong scooted from acting half back over the line.
Both defences tightened up until Archbishop’s Tom Black caught the ball from an extraordinary offload and sprinted away into the corner to extedn the lead. Again, a relentless Kelvin Hall struck back after an error from the East Hull School, Kai Armstrong picked up the loose ball crashing over for his second try. Wise Ratuvou kicked the goal for Kelvin Hall. Archbishop responded again and Thistleton scored in the corner. Finally, seconds before from half time, Archbishop Sentamu’s Ethan Dooley put on some footwork and sent himself flying over the line to score another try. At half time, Archbishop had an eight point lead with the score at 18-10.
Kelvin Hall responded from the half time break with Mohammed Amjed crashing over the line to reduce the deficit. Ratuvou added the extras. With the lead down to two points, the next score could prove to be decisive. Archbishops Leo Stovin scored in the corner from a Tom Black break to extend the lead again. Archbishop were now in the ascendency and Kieran Smith fought off three Kelvin Hall defenders with strength and footwork to score over the line.
However Kelvin Hall refused to capitulate and the West Hull School showed resilience to comeback into the game. AJ Chambers crossed the whitewash after an Archbishop error.. With minutes left, Archbishop Sentamu’s Tom Smith kicked a gliding ball into the hands of Leon Thistleton who scored his hat trick underneath the uprights. Tom Black added the extras as the hooter sounded as Archbishop won 36-20. Archbishop Sentamu Academy’s Tom Black was named the Man of the Match.
